The shopping scene of L.A is both flashy and luxurious, grim and strange, just like the city itself. Fed by a steady supply of new L.A. brands, and a class of celebrities with a new hobby of trendy dress, the city's retail stalwarts have expanded and are more ambitious and the Graphic Tees & Guys T-Shirts! Meanwhile, new stores have sprung up like wildflowers in a clearing. If you think back eight or nine years ago, L.A. for nothing, Mr. Mac Hadar, who runs H. Lorenzo, opened an independent men's shop in 2018 in West Hollywood after nearly 40 years of business. But recently it has become one of the most important cities for fashion today, on par with Paris.

But shopping for the big picture is that Los Angeles retail isn't as convenient as strolling down Madison Avenue in New York City or through Lenox Square in Atlanta. To learn how to crack it, I embarked on an L.A. Tour de Jawnz that saw me logged 51.2 miles over the course of five days and the Graphic Tees & Guys T-Shirts! The angel city did not disappoint. These days, walk into most stores and you can feel Amazon-sized e-commerce ghosts lurking in the corners, waiting to wipe out this place. Not so much at the temples of L.A. of advanced and exclusive tastes where the vibe still feels clear before the internet. At the venerable Maxfield on Melrose, opened in 1969, I half-believed that a young Christian Slater would pop out from behind the hoodie hanger until I realized the hoodie was Off-White.
